Hooked On A Jellyroll!

It's not what you think... honestly! I don't even like jellyrolls, not the kind from the donut shop anyway. But I do like this new kind! You quilters know what I'm talking about, yeah?

After a couple months drooling over a quilt that I saw online... I've taken the plunge! I've bought myself a jellyroll of Moda fabric and I'm gonna make me a quilt!! I'm excited, the dabbling I did a few months ago in that 2 hour class at JoAnn's got me interested, but a quilt is a big chunk to bite off all at once, money wise and time wise. And I'll tell you a little secret... I doubt myself. I worry that I won't be able to do it, or that I'll mess it all up and it'll look awful.

So here's what I came up with..........screw it!

I'm making this quilt for myself for my 36th birthday (which is just about a month away, yipes!). If I mess it up, so what? It's a learning experience, right? Randomly, Sean came in last night and said something to me that encouraged me so much. I don't know where he heard it, but it's true.
"All artists start as amateurs."
Yeah! I like that.

So you wanna see my inspiration, the quilt that "made me do it"?
Sure you do!

Isn't it GORGEOUS?

Gosh, I love it so much. I've been following Aneela's blog Comfortstitching for a while, and everything she does is so pretty, go see for yourself, her work is beautiful. This quilt has a light and airy quality, without being overly girly. And I love what she says about the colors of this quilt, because I feel exactly the same way...

Aneela graciously allowed be to borrow a picture of her quilt from her blog so that I could share it with you all, thanks Aneela!

Also, like Aneela, I will be using this tutorial. I need to stop over and say thanks to the lady who wrote it so that even a boob like me can understand. Woooohoooo, this is going to be fun! Challenging, but fun!

I bought my jellyroll of Moda fabric from eBay just a few days ago and it already came in the mail!
I'm giddy!

Sherberty, rainbow goodness!

Oh Lordy, please help me not to mess this quilt up!

I have to buy white fabric, I'm going to the fabric store tomorrow... I think I need 3 yards to have the same amount as the jellyroll... Do you guys know? I figured I have roughly 100" of fabric and that's a little less than 3 full yards...gulp...right? I might need some pointers girls.

Wish this newbie luck! I'll keep you updated at every turn.

I love the fabric!!! This "fabric hound" might just have to look for one of these in a jelly roll...I can't get enough of them! If you're going to make the same quilt, perhaps you can get the definitive answer to the required yardage in white from Annela? Or Moda's site might be able to answer it for you, too. I can't wait to see what your quilt looks like finished! You're gonna do just a great job!

I don't think you really can mess up. My first quilt has tons of "errors" in it, but I and most people who see it, like it. Might not win any prizes, but it will keep me warm.

I never used jelly rolls, so someone else will have to help you with that.

Sean is a very wise man. :) I'm so excited that you're going for it! That jelly roll makes me wish that I was a quilter-- LOVE the colors and patterns.

Don't worry about making mistakes. Isn't it the Amish (THE master quilters) that say something to the effect of "Don't worry about mistakes, only God creates perfection."? Well, it was something like that. I'm sure I totally screwed up the phrase, but you get the idea. If I recall correctly (or incorrectly) they even leave a little mistake in each quilt.

As far as answering the fabric measurement question... you might want to call Country Sewing Center in Elk Grove. (Have you been there? We've gotta' go!) Everyone that works there quilts, and I think that they sell jelly rolls.

Lisa, You go girl!!! I'm sure you can do whatever you take on, and do it just beautifully too! I love the colors of your jelly roll, and that quilt is to die for gorgeous!!! I've never made a "real" quilt...I'd have to come to some sort of truce with my sewing machine before spending so much time with him...you see, we really hate each other! I can't wait to see how you progress with this...you are soooo way inspiring! Good luck sweetie pie, and have fun! xoxo Paulette ;) P.S. Give an extra hug to Sean for a great quote!
