Part I: Flying

Hello Friends,
It's been a while since I've been around these parts or blogland in general, over two weeks - which feels like a long time to me. I guess it's because - and this may sound weird - so much and very little have happened in that time. Let's catch up, shall we?

Part I: Flying

Just after my last post, Sean and I took a trip on the Vespas that we'd been looking forward to for months. We rode our scooters up to Lake Tahoe to join up for a scooter rally with a local club. This was to be our longest ride together, and the farthest away from home on the scoots.

We were a little nervous about the trip, safety on the road is something I take very seriously.  There's no protection between you and the road, or other cars when you're traversing the roads, highways and streets on two wheels. You've got to be on your game and keep your head on a swivel.  The road to Lake Tahoe is a long way over some pretty high mountains. Luther Pass has an elevation of 7,740 feet, and Carson Pass is 8574 feet!
Here I am with our scoots, packed and ready to roll. You'd be surprised how much you can pack onto a Vespa. We each had three days worth of clothing and other necessities (hello, flat iron & flip flops) and we weren't even fully loaded. What a great feeling to know I can set out on the road prepared for several days journey on my scooter. I love this thing, I tell ya.

The ride up was fantastic! Very little traffic, it was hot, but not miserably so, and in the mountains, riding a Vespa feels like flying, they are so smooth, and quiet. You don't hear the machine, all you hear is the muffled sound of the wind blowing around your helmet. It's amazing.

 We took Hwy 88 from Lodi to Lake Tahoe. It's a very windy road, through some gorgeous scenery - my favorite kind for scooting. After you've ridden for a while, you gain an understanding of leaning on your bike so that moving in and out of turns and is pretty darn fun. Straight roads bore me to tears.

We had a great time at the rally, the folks we met up with are terrific, funny, generous people who just enjoy each other and riding. The theme of the rally was Luau At The Lake, so there were lots of tropical touches, like this backdrop thingy, I had to include this silly picture of Sean and I.

As a guest, of the club I didn't feel comfortable taking a lot of pictures of the group, and while you're riding you can't, but here are a couple from our stop at CalNeva when we road all the way around the lake which was fabulous. I'm looking forward to riding there again, just Sean and I, so we can stop along the way whenever we see something interesting, and there's lots to see.
I think there were somewhere around 35 people on all different types of scooters riding together around Lake Tahoe. What a gorgeous ride, and what a great time!

This place is really neat, and has some very cool history if you're into Frank Sinatra & Marilyn Monroe.

Another big reason for this trip is because it coincided with our nephew's 11th birthday. He's getting so big, starting 6th grade in a couple of weeks. Crazy how fast that happens.

I was happy to get to spend some time with him. I miss them all so much since they moved to Tahoe. This boy is such a special kid. Kind and smart. Adventurous and fun (and funny!). Brave and sweet. Athletic and bookish. He has the best laugh, when he laughs really hard his whole face crinkles into a humongous smile. I love him so.

Every time I see him I trap him in an vice-like Auntie hug and hold him tight until he wriggles free, giggling and squirming. I'm sure it's totally embarrassing, but I won't be able to do that forever, he's not going to stand for that kind of thing when he's 16, or ever after, so I'm getting all the squishes I can while the gettin's good.

His birthday party was held on Pope Beach, just north west of South Lake Tahoe.
It's a beautiful beach, could it be more lovely?

 It's also a great place for families.

 My little niece is getting big too. Such a funny girl, this one, she has the cutest, quirkiest sense of humor.

My sister-in-law, Apryl makes the neatest pinatas! She's made one just about every year for J's birthday.

They take a real beating before the loose their goodies.

And then it's every man (or little girl) for themselves to grab for the plundered booty.

This little skull cap was all that was left of the pinata :)

It was a good time.

Until we got some sad news.
A friend of ours was killed the night before. Hit by a careless driver who made a left turn in front of his motorcycle and smashed into him. The accident was one block from the hospital, which didn't matter, the damage was too great. Carl passed away in the operating room as surgeons tried to save him.

The rest of my time in Tahoe that weekend is a bit of a blur. We finished up at the scooter rally on Sunday morning, had lunch in town, then got on the road mid afternoon. Our ride home was subdued, and extra cautious. It was not lost on me that we were doing exactly what Carl was doing when his life abruptly ended, taking a ride on his bike, enjoying the summer...

The news of Carl's death has shaken me, angered me immensely and set my mind drifting, I'm planning to write a bit more about it in my next post.

Please take care out there, friends. Please look twice for bikes on the road. Like I said earlier, for those of us on two wheels, be they Vespa, Harley-Davidson, or anything in between, there is no buffer between us and the road apart from our safety gear which doesn't stand a chance against cars and trucks. And even if we're doing everything right, some don't make it home from a ride.

I know this subject is heavy, and not my usual blogging style, which I prefer like to keep light and bright. But this is me real life, and something that has affected me which I feel I must share.

Summer Scooting

Summer scooting is the best. Evening is my favorite. I love to meander lazily through town, scoot up and down every shady street in the neighborhood.

Here are a few of the things that make these scoots so special to me, like healing tonic to my soul...
Lavender and jasmine floating on the breeze
Laundry tumbling in the dryer
Dinner wafting through open windows
A warm breeze on my face
Gardens in full bloom
Kids playing in the yard
Folks walkin' their dogs
Smiles and waves exchanged

These things make me happy.
Hope you're having a happy summer too.

Spring Scootin'

Helloooo Ladies!
Well, another week... no embroidery... shame, shame, shame! I'm gettin to it, I'm gettin to it. But today was really fun and I wanted to share my adventure with you gals!

Early this morning I packed up my scoot and took a good long ride into the hills with my friend Richard. This was to be my longest scoot yet and it didn't disappoint. My part of the ride was 125 miles, round trip! That's a lot for a rookie, right? I'm gonna earn me an iron butt badge!!

So before we start, and since this is really my first post about riding, I would like to start by saying that I'm all about safety. I value my life, I don't do stupid things and I won't wear irresponsible clothing. It might look cute to ride a scooter in a skirt and flip-flops, but it's stupid (IMHO). One of the first pieces of advice I got when I got my first scooter 3 years ago was "you don't dress for the ride, you dress for the crash". I take that to heart. Lord bless me, I have never yet crashed, slid, lost traction or wrecked. Fear and a healthy respect for my body, speed and road conditions keep me a very careful rider. Besides, if I got hurt, my mom would kill me. Having the right gear was a priority, and in the month since I bought my new girl I have acquired all new gear for riding at the speeds it takes me to ride to work (19 miles each way through the country, city and if I'm ever brave enough, the freeway) and road trips into the country. Let's go through it quickly shall we?

First and foremost, a new lid. Here's mine... ain't she a beaut?

Secondly, a new jacket. Serious road protection, has shoulder, elbow and back armor. Textile and vented so I can wear it in our HOT California summers and still be fully protected.
And you know I gotta have some embroidery on this baby, right?? Check this out...
I'm not really into the look of "bas-a$$ biker chick", but I think this is pretty cool. I like biker chicks by the way... I'm just one one of them. Wrong kinda bike. I'm a bad-a$$ scooter chick!!

And of course, I gotta protect the digits! how else could I serve tea and embroider??
Look, the knuckles protectors are hearts, squeee!

But no outfit would be complete without a touch of the handmade, so I made this!
It's a "turtle neck". It goes over my head, under my jacket and beneath my helmet. It's purpose is two fold. One is obviously to keep my neck warm, you'd be surprised how cold that one inch between jacket collar and helmet gets, brr! And secondly its a "hair-holder-downer" Hehe... I don't like my hair flapping when I ride, it bugs me, and this helps keep it down in my coat.

Lastly, some new shoes! Tennies won't protect your ankles and feet if something bad happens, so they recommend you wear boots... these are the ones I picked.
Dr. Martens are supposed to be really comfy and these kinda go with everything...and... they have flowers!

So!

That's what I wear whilst commuting and on long rides. Now with all that said, in the interest of truth I will be very honest and say that if I'm just scooting around town, or to the grocery store I usually just wear jeans, a hoodie and tennies. Some folks are Team ATGATT (All The Gear All The Time), which is smart. But it does take a little of the fun out of scooting if you have to put on full gear each and every time you run to the store...  I know that there is an inherit risk involved in two wheeled vehicles and I accept that risk. Cool? Ok, now lets get to today's ride!

So I left Lodi and met my friend in Linden, it's about 20ish miles from my place. Meet Richard, he's not just my friend, he's my boss. Pretty cool, aye?
Talk about safety gear, get a load of that outfit! At 130mph I'd wear it too...
Yes, he really goes 130+ mph... he's got mad skillz!
Bellisimo! Two hot Italian red heads! Ducati & Vespa.

We left Linden and wound our way up into the foot hills of Northern California's gold country... We went through Burson, up into Valley Springs, and across Pardee Dam and Reservoir.
There I am!

It was such a gorgeous day!!! You could see for miles!
There's my new helmet... covered in bugs, splat! Major gross-o!

While I was being my usual snap happy self, Rich was setting up the video camera to film the ride, too cool!
He even got video of me riding ahead of him, I'll add it later if I can.

From Pardee, we took some seriously twisty roads and dropped into Jackson for some grub.
BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger and Fries... SO not on my diet... Hey man, scootin gives a girl an appetite!

There were hundreds of bikes on the road today, there was some kind of poker run/charity ride happening. We didn't know it until we stumbled into it, there was a sign in post at Mel's. So many smiling, waving Harley riders today! It was rad.
We left Jackson and headed out Hwy 49 up into Mokelumne Hill, then across the rim of a portion of Hwy 26, which is gorgeous and I wish I woulda stopped for pictures. We dropped back down into Valley Springs, and back to where we started in Linden where I filled up with gas, cleaned some of the bugs off of my visor and headed for home back in Lovable, livable, Lodi.

There were baby cows and wild flowers everywhere! I want to do another ride like this again soon to take loads and loads of pictures before the hills lose their green and the flowers dry up. It was a beautiful, beautiful ride. I'm so glad I did it!

Here's a link to a Google map I made detailing our trip if you're really curious, it's got the locations of all the towns we passed through, haha.  I actually made this map so that Sean and I might be able to take this ride together when he gets a bigger scoot.

I was pooped when I got home! I changed clothes and took a nap, whew.
What an adventure!

I hope you enjoyed my little pictorial!

Hoping to post some cute stuff tomorrow.

Tap, tap, tap...hello? Is this thing on?

Hi Girls~
I haven't fallen off the face of the planet, I swear! But I also can't believe it's been a week since I've talked to most of you... or picked up a needle and thread. What a sad thing, no? Even my mom made a comment on my facebook page... "Hello? We're waiting for squares 34 & 35" Hehehe... I promise I haven't been slacking! It's been a heck of a busy week.

 Since we last talked, I...

Stitched up a little goodie and celebrated into the wee hours
of the morning, one of my best friends birthdays!
More on the goodie later...
(We've been friends since 7th grade! Left to right is Tiffany, Melissa (the b-day girl) and yours truly.)

Hosted a small book club meeting/tea party. Exciting deets to come!
Stayed up all night doing my taxes (yuck!)
(This isn't me, but it's not far off the mark.)

Went back to Jazzercise (after a year away, and limped & complained for the next two days... it's ok, I totally deserve it. That's what I get for treating my body poorly for almost a year).
 Don't laugh, or at least don't laugh unless you've tried it lately, Jazzercise is hard!
(This ain't me either... I flippin' wish!)

Went to opening night of baseball season with Sean for our local Single A team, the Stockton Ports.
You know what that means, right?? Baseball Season = Guilt Free Embroidery time!!

Said goodbye to my beloved Metropolitan...
But that's ok because Lulu went to a really good home...
(Recognize the b-day girl?)

Melissa is now the proud mama of my first and much loved scooter! I wish I didn't have to sell her, but
Miss Vespa didn't come cheap... but she sure is purrty...and fast!

Sew my darlings, this is why I've been absent as of late. As much as I loved the 35 Squares project and getting to embroider every single day and have show and tell with you all every morning, it's been a marathon. But don't count me out just yet, I have a plan for those last two squares! They're sketched in on the fabric, the colors chosen, they only need to be stitched! I'm going to TRY to get some done this weekend. I say "try" because it's already stacking up to be a busy humm~dinger.

Tomorrow I have Miss Ava's 1st birthday!!
 ...and Sunday the wedding of my handsome cousin and his beautiful bride as well as baseball games BOTH Saturday & Sunday with Sean. Oy!

I hope I don't sound like I'm complaining, these are blessings and I'm so happy and grateful to have such a busy life filled with much fun, love and people who mean so much to me. You ladies, and this wonderfully encouraging blog community mean a lot to me too! Thank you for following along these last few weeks, it's been a fun adventure and I've really enjoyed getting to know so many new and talented stitchers and all around great chics!

I'll be back soon!

11th, 12th and 13th Square

Morning Everyone~
Are you ready to "spring forward"?? Personally, I prefer to "fall back" I appreciate that extra hour in the morning... have you already set about moving all your clocks forward one hour? I haven't...I need coffee first :o)~

Who's ready for more squares? Me! Me!

Square 11~ A simple spring leaf

Square 12 & 13 ~ Happy scooter
A little scoot on a sunny day! That's one thing sure to make me happy! I think I'm going to add another little cloud in the upper left of this square. Originally this was only one square (square 13), not two, but after I finished it the last stitch on the scooter, I wanted to give this baby some pavement and sense of motion, so it grew into two squares and now looks just a little off balance. I think another puffy little cloud will solve that. What do you guys think?

So here's where we are so far, I dig this project more every day!!
~~~~
I have an adorable little scooter, don't think I've ever mentioned it here before, I love it. But... there's an upgrade in my future... I'll share the details soon, but here's a picture of the scooter I have now... isn't she CUTE?!? I could die from the cuteness! This is at the lake near our house. See that factory in the upper right? That's where Sean works, General Mills. If you live in the western half of the United States and you eat Cinnamon Toast Crunch, there's a good chance my husband made it! You're welcome. Heehee.
Sean has a scooter too, we scoot together. It's hecca fun! Summer before last we took the scoots to Yosemite and putzed around. It was awesome! Here's a couple of pictures...
In the truck, easy as you please...
Heck yeah we're about to scoot a National Park!
Of course the guy who offered to take our picture just HAD to get his hog in the shot... punk.
Two scooters were never as happy as these two...
That about wraps up show & tell for today kiddies! It's a beautiful crisp, blue day and I think I'm going to go for a scooter ride!
Toodles!
